Assistive Technology and Augmentative Communication

The ±«Óãtv Statewide Assistive Technology, Augmentative, and Alternative Communication (SWAAAC) team provides assistive technology and augmentative/alternative communication support for students, parents, and school teams. In collaboration with school-based teams, SWAAAC team members provide assistance with:

  • Assessing students' assistive technology and/or augmentative/alternative communication needs 
  • Accessing assistive technology and augmentative/alternative communication equipment and software
  • Training staff, families, and students
  • Decision-making with regards to assistive technology and augmentative/alternative communication systems and supports

Referrals to the SWAAAC team are generated by school teams based on student needs. Students typically referred to SWAAAC may have challenges related to:

  • Difficulties producing work
  • Understanding written information
  • Verbal communication
  •  Physically interacting with their environment
  • Effectively participating as a student
